Banned from participation in Wimbledon, in reaction to Ukraine’s invasion by the Russian army, Russian and Belarusian players will be able to retaliate against the upcoming US Open (on 29 September 11). The American Tennis Federation (USTA) released a statement Tuesday announcing that the latter will be able to compete “Only under a neutral banner” either the formula that had been adopted by the Roland-Garros organization.
The USTA, however, had supported the exclusion of the Russian and Belarusian federations from team competitions and the International Federation (ITF). L’USTA “Continue to condemn the deliberate and unjust invasion of Ukraine by Russia”, recall the communiqué. But the American Federation is moving forward “Special circumstances” to which she must face.
World number 1 Daniil Medvedev will therefore be on the verge of defending his title at the US Open.
