Nostalgia. R11 turbo: Renault’s anti-Golf GTI

In 1977, Renault would turn the flop of the R14 by drawing no less than two cars on the same chassis. Robert Opron, a former Citroën, joins the direction of style and is set to head the L42 project.

In 1982, it was the release of the R9 / R11 couple; a classic tri-body sedan and a hayon sedan. In 1983, Renault released a game against the haut and present the Renault 11 Turbo, unique in 3 ports.

Light alloy wheels, strippings on the sides, calender with double beacons are part of the signature, as are the specific front and rear screws.

The Cléon is in service

Pour the motor into the 11 Turbo, Renault and take back an old classic already seen on the R 5 Alpine Turbo: the Cléon in fonte porté à 1 397 cm3 and gavé par turbo Garrett T2.

The turbo is air -conditioned and breathes at 0.7 bar. It is located above the Solex 32 DIS carburetor and the ignition is fully electronic. The 11 Turbo benefits from 105 ch rather raging.

0 to 100 km/h is at 9.3 seconds and 190 km/h. In 1985, the 3 -door version was joined by a 5 -door all -rounder but more accessible for the father of the family.

The performances encourage the Gendarmerie to acquire an 11 Turbo; she will do her service with GIGN and keep her metallic gray delivery. In 1985, the limited series “Zender” appeared in partnership with the German manufacturer on the base of the R11 3 doors.

This R11 Turbo receives not only a body kit, but also has 4 rear bars of the same type as the R5 GT Turbo.

It all comes with 4 included Zender allies at 15 pouces. A spoiler is mounted on the front and the rear socket is magnificent. The power remains the same.

Restylage in 1986

In 1986, the restoration of the 11 Turbo accompanied an evolution of the front with the abandonment of double headlights. Under the hood, the turbo is water cooled and the engine earns 10 horses. 115 ch, that’s better, but the car is more pointed.

Phase 2 wins 4 disc brakes and recovers the rims of the R9 phase 1. At this time, Pierre Ferry, another mechanical sorcerer, proposed a kit that allows him to win a few more horses to reach 200 km/h at 0 to 100 in 7,8 seconds: turbo pressure augmentée, freins modifies and renforcés, it is Rial in 15 pouces. About twenty kits would have been mounted.

The R11 in rally speed

In 1984, its R 11 Turbo rallied with, at its helm, Alain Oreille. The car has a tight brake and the car is reliable. With 32 participation in rallies (championnat de France, Tour de Corse, Monte Carlo) on the R 11 Turbo and up to 26!

In 1987, the noong 11 Turbo became Renault’s steering wheel in a rally after the Group B stop. A lot of work was done to improve the engine’s power and adapt the speed box for the competition.

A kit of 180 horses is offered for sale by Renault Sport. The short car in Group A, especially with Jean Ragnotti, who performs miracles at his steering wheel.
